Planning For Appliances, Cabinets, and Electrical Outlets
The previous section of this chapter discussed how to build walls and ceilings in your home. As mentioned, you must take into consideration what kind of lights, switches, outlets, and appliances youâll have in your home so you can properly wire your home. Your choice of cabinets must also be considered, since some modern cabinets have features like lighting and small wine refrigerators. Proper planning will ensure you donât run into any issues when it comes time to mount cabinets, appliances, and install electrical features. However, before you begin, you should double check so that you donât further bury a problem before it is discovered. Even though youâve already added your drywall, you can still avoid uninstalling cabinets and other fixtures to fix something you forgot. Drywall can be repaired fairly easily with mud.
A good starting point for installing interior fixtures is lights. You should have boxes in the wall where your light fixtures will go. Once you get lights up and going, it becomes much easier and pleasant to work on other things. This also allows you to check that all your switches are properly run. You can also begin placing outlets where they belong and testing them.
In your bathroom, you should have water lines sticking through your floor for your bathroom sink from before you laid your floor. With your wall completed, you can now add your sink and desired vanity cabinet. Mount the cabinet by screwing it to the wall. You will locate where the studs are in the wall by measuring or using a stud finder. From there, using a drill, screw 2â-3â screws through the back of the cabinet frame and into the wall. Use a level to ensure the cabinet top is level and square with the wall. If needed, the bottom of the cabinet can sit uneven with the floor and be secured with shims. It is best to perfect the surface that people see and use and hide any imperfections out of sight.
Once the cabinet is properly secured to the wall, tie in the plumbing to the actual sink. You can also run your drainage pipe down into the sewer/septic line. Be sure to properly install your âP-trapâ under the sink to avoid sewer gasses seeping up into your house. P-traps are the curvature design in the drain pipes below your sink which create a pocket for water to stay in. This water creates a barrier between your sink drain and the gasses and smells coming from your sewer or septic system.
In order to complete your bathroom, you need to install your toilet. Toilets come as nearly complete packages when you purchase them, but you do have to put the proper fitting on the drain pipe first. Check the specific hardware list on a new toilet you purchase to ensure there is a flange included. If not, simply buy one separately and install.
